As the mercury starts to rise in spring and summer, gardeners will be busy watering their prize plants. If you want an even ‘greener’ garden this year, it might be time to finally invest in that water butt. By collecting rainwater in a water butt it will help keep your garden, and the environment, healthy. Plants much prefer rainwater than tap water and using less tap water helps save money on water bills. It also means we can take less water from rivers and our environment in order to provide drinking water supplies.
Just one water butt holds enough rainwater to fill a watering can 25 times and based on an average rainfall you can fill your butt up to 450 times a year.
-Buying a water butt to collect rainwater can be a cost-effective, and more environmentally friendly, way to look after your plants year-round.
-Rainwater is generally better for your plants than the stuff we get out of the tap, as it contains all the nutrients they need with none of the added chlorine. Although plants can tolerate tap water, it isn’t as good for them.
-If we get a really hot ‘BBQ summer’ (here’s hoping), and there’s a hosepipe ban, having a water butt can be a real lifeline to keep your garden looking good.
